Closet Design: Customizing Chaos
Spacious closets have become an essential space in the bedroom and have even become a key selling point when investing in a home. The days of being satisfied with a closet that can hold a single rack and a couple of shelving units are long gone. Now there are infinite ways to transform a cluttered closet that barely fits your necessities, into a customized closet with ample room for organization.
Here at Palmer Todd, we seamlessly fuse aesthetic beauty and functional design, tailored specifically to each customer’s wants and needs. While Palmer Todd is widely recognized for state-of-the-art kitchens and bathrooms, we have recognized a higher demand for custom closets. Our design portfolio continually expands, and closets are no exception.
In our newly renovated showroom, we use department store display techniques to acquire space for more items. When we say custom closets, we mean it. At Palmer Todd, we take exact inventory of a person’s items: shoes, ties, clothes, scarves, accessories, and even off-season items are considered for various levels of storage.
We even measure handbag collections. To improve a closet, the designer needs to realize what the client has and what they need. For example, how many short racks, long racks, high shelving units and low shelving units will be needed? Will the client need a jewelry safe, modified drawer to fit their clothes, or a motorized tie rack? Each feature of the closet should be refined so that the final product is sleek, polished, and functional.
Notably, his/her side accommodations are becoming increasingly popular in closet renovations. One area can be a space entirely dedicated to a woman’s inventory: wide shoe racks for heels, lower or higher clothing racks conforming to a woman’s height, ottomans to sit and try on shoes, garment-bag storage, or multi-folding mirrors.

The other complimentary space can be tailored for a man: lower or higher racks conforming to a man’s height, modified drawers for socks, and even custom storage for watches and cufflinks.
Interior designers have revamped and elevated the simple notion of a closet. The purpose of hiring a specialist is to condense the workload of the client and accommodate the needs of each person. The first step is figuring out the client’s specific needs and understanding their lifestyle. Palmer Todd ensures each client will have the beautifully functional closet of their dreams.
When personalizing a closet, it is important to go in with a plan for the future. For example, varying the heights of hanging rods and leaving ample space to add on storage is something to consider for a child’s room. After all, children grow, their heights change, and they accumulate clothes over time. Customizing a closet to transform as they evolve is a worthwhile investment.
A rule of thumb for closet construction is to know your pattern of inventory; the things you have, the things you buy, and the things you will have. These are all key elements in figuring out the best way to construct a closet and expand or alter it in the future. Much like tailoring clothes, a closet should be adjusted to a person’s needs.
